ALTER EGO - A STUDY IN EMPATHY ("From scared to prepared") is a up-close, joyful and instructive portrait of Thomas Hanzon, one of Sweden's most experienced actors, as he prepares for the premiere of The Night Shelter at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in the winter/spring of 2022. How does he approach the work of taking on a new role and transforming himself into his alter ego on stage?
For filmmaker Carl Eneroth, this is a study in empathy, the ability to walk in another person's shoes; whether as a tramp in the night shelter, a murderer in the Netflix film Red Dot or a billionaire in the acclaimed play Inheritance; adding to his 40 years of experience in stage, film and television series; working for directors such as Ingemar Bergman and Arthur Miller. ALTER EGO is both a "teach-me-how-to" documentary and a glimpse behind the scenes of creating drama for theatre, movies and audiobooks, working with different techniques to embody a character. Thomas went from being a professional football player at the age of 17 to starting his own theatre company and then landing jobs on the national scenes, without attending drama school. Instead he observed the best and tried to figure out how they did it.
In a most generous way, Thomas shares his insights as we step into The Night Shelter play, set in a not so far future when culture institutions has been abandoned. Little did they know when Russia shortly after invaded Ukraine and blew out the theatre of Mariopoul, the same setting as in the Night Shelter. Fiction became reality in the stories we tell each other.
